This talk is primarily for those who are comfortable developing Apps for the web who want to delve into mobile and PhoneGap. In this workshop we'll start with a working web app and walk through the process of turning it into a PhoneGap mobile app (at least for Android, and perhaps on other platforms as well). We'll make use of some device APIs and talk about online/offline considerations as well.

To really get the most out of this class you'll need a good understanding of JavaScript and web apps. It would also be wise to look into the PhoneGap documentation to get a sense for what the platform is like.

Having built a successful, well-reviewed app on this platform, it’s time to share back with the community. Here are some of the key takeaways you'll get in this workshop: How much of an effort should you expect to create a mobile app from an already-functioning web app? What works great out of the box? What assumptions get shattered in the move to mobile? What tools should you use and which should you avoid?

Prerequisites:

  • Strong understanding of HTML and particularly, JavaScript.
  • A basic understanding of Android and iOS application development would also be handy.

What to Bring:

  • You'll definitely want to bring a laptop and at least have the Android SDK installed and ant (the build system).
  • You should download and install the latest version of PhoneGap as well. It would be great if you try to build a hello world Android app with PhoneGap beforehand so that you don't waste your time just getting that set up.
